Jorge-Mario Cabrera Valladares was born in El Salvador but in 1982 was forced to seek refuge with his family in the U.S. due to the 12-year civil war tearing his country apart. He attended Bell Gardens High School , UC Santa Cruz and UC Los Angeles focusing in Community Studies and Public Health. He became a U.S. citizen in 2007. He is passionate about helping others fight injustice and forge opportunities for immigrants, ethnic communities, persons with HIV/AIDS, LGBTs, and Spanish-speakers. His expertise in fund raising, communications, media relations, and program management and development has allowed him to serve in various leadership capacities at several community-based organizations including Clinica del Pueblo (Watsonville, CA), Clinica Para Las Americas (Los Angeles, CA), BIENESTAR Human Services (East Los Angeles), Los Angeles County Office of Policy Planning for HIV/AIDS, LLEGO National (Washington, DC), SHANTI (Hollywood), Central American Resource Center (CARECEN, Pico/Union), the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities (NALACC), and now the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles (CHIRLA). He is bilingual and at times shares his thoughts with his 7-year-old Siamese cat, Michi. |
