Karla was born in Los Angeles, California to Salvadoran immigrants who fled the country during the civil war. Thanks to her parents’ countless sacrifices, she graduated high school from Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles and went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she earned her B.A. in Spanish with a minor in Latin American Studies.

 After UCLA, Karla received her Juris Doctorate degree from Southwestern Law School. While at Southwestern, she explored her interest in Immigration Law. She participated in the Immigration Law Clinic and externed at the Central American Resource Center. She was also active on campus as Co-President of the Latino Law Student Association and Co-Vice President of the Women’s Law Association.

 Karla joined CHIRLA in the fall of 2012 as a Deferred Action Fellow assisting clients applying for DACA. Currently, she oversees the Naturalization and Citizenship program under which she and fellow staff help hundreds of applicants become U.S. citizens each year.
