For Immediate Release: April 30, 2002

Good Jobs, Immigration Reform, Voting, Peace
May 1 themes reflect local and national priorities focused on building strength for long haul

Los Angeles – The traditional May Day mobilization in Los Angeles is upon us.  The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) will march and rally alongside a very diverse coalition, the May 1 Unity Coalition, on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, starting at 1 p.m. at Olympic Blvd. and S. Broadway, downtown Los Angeles.

This year’s themes reflect the urgency for justice including good jobs, a good education, and peace, a reference to U.S. engagement in belic conflicts throughout the world, especially in Afghanistan.  Long held a traditional request during this march, updates to our nation’s broken immigration system.  At a time when one million five hundred thousand people have been deported during the past three years, and laws such as Arizona’s SB1070 proliferate, the human crisis will be represented by marchers through messages and images on t-shirts, posters, and banners. Finally, a call has gone out to the nearly 8 million lawful permanent residents who now qualify to become U.S. citizens now.  The community’s collective voice at the ballot box offers our families the best firewall for laws detrimental to our progress and well-being.

Marchers will gather at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Olympic and Broadway streets, downtown Los Angeles.  Approximately at 2 p.m. participants will start walking North on Broadway towards First Street.  A rally marks the end of the route sat approximately 3:30 p.m.  All marchers are urged to bring American flags, wear white t-shirts and hats to stave off the heat, and drink plenty of liquids.

CHIRLA, in collaboration with the Multicultural Immigrant Worker Organizing Network (MIWON), ANSWER Coalition, Center for Community Change, CARECEN, California Dream Network, Clean Carwash Campaign, Comisión Binacional de Organizaciones, COFEM, Filipino Workers Center, Full Immigrant Rights Coalition, Hermandad Mexicana Nacional, Hermandad Mexicana Transnacional, IDEPSCA, KIWA, LIUNA, LACFL/AFL-CIO, May Day Queer Contingent, NDLON, National Lawyers Guild, SEIU/ULTCW, and Vamos Unidos USA, is helping coordinate the traditional May 1 workers march downtown Los Angeles
