La Prensa: Arizona Immigration Law Meets Growing Rejection

US Arizona Immigration Law Meets Growing Rejection

Washington, May 13 (Prensa Latina) Rejection of the anti-immigrant legislation that was passed in southern Arizona state continues on Thursday in the United States, with the emergence of initiatives that include economic sanctions.

The measure, which was received some weeks ago by the state government, unleashed different reactions in some cities of the country, and even some local assemblies are assessing similar bills against those with no identity papers.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles city council passed a law for economic sanctions in response to the initiative SB1070, which penalizes undocumented people.

While activist and union organizations defend and make the boycott official, some groups that favor the legislation are getting ready to keep hassling to support similar initiatives in other states in June.

Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) Executive Director Angelica Salas highlighted the impact that Los Angeles sanction may have on other large cities.

We are pleased that one of the most important immigrant cities of the nation is sending the message that intolerance and xenophobia have no place here, stated Salas.
