Legal services at CHIRLA
At a time of scarce community legal services, CHIRLA works to provide the high-quality representation our community requires. CHIRLA is recognized by the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and conducts a variety of immigration legal services at a low cost. Licensed attorneys supervise all legal staff, including accredited representatives and paralegals. Legal services include:
- Family petitions
- U visas
- Deportation defense
- DACA renewal
- Asylum requests
- Student legal services
CHIRLA attorneys and Department of Justice representatives provide reliable expertise with cultural sensitivity to the trauma our immigrant community regularly sustains.
During the COVID-19 health emergency, CHIRLA’s offices are closed to the public in accordance with county health directives. However, our legal staff remains on the job.
We provide limited legal services for DACA renewals via a consultation request link posted on our Instagram and Facebook pages on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 a.m. The link remains open until slots for appointments are filled. The slots fill up fast, so if you cannot access the link, watch for the next posting.
If you have non-DACA legal questions, we encourage you to call 213-201-3797 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Legal staff are available at the time to answer your questions.
We continue to represent our clients in detention, as immigration courts continue some operations, including hearings. We confer with our clients and file motions in their cases as we are able.
We also work with the policy and advocacy department to push the federal government to release all immigrants held in crowded private detention lockups with little medical attention. We know that, in this pandemic, our clients are at deadly risk, as are workers at those facilities. We believe continuing detention policies in this environment will only prolong the damage from this disease.
Please check back for updates as the recovery moves forward.
