Karen Hernandez was born and raised in South Orange County, to undocumented immigrant parents from Mexico City. Her passion towards immigrant right’s stems from her own lived experiences within her mixed-legal status family. During her sophomore year of college, her brother was detained by ICE and her father was detained a month later. Nevertheless, she persisted and her passion towards social justice grew immensely becoming President of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance club on campus for two consecutive years. She was later chosen from a competitive pool of applicants to study Civil Rights in Selma, Alabama and soon after graduating from California State University, Los Angeles with a Bachelors in Political Science.
Karen is humbled to work alongside with both CHIRLA’s Community Education team and CHIRLA’s Legal Services team. Her lived experiences have prepared her to support and uplift marginalized communities in both Los Angeles and Orange County.
