My name is Luis Alberto Perez Cruz. I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. I came to this country at the age of 7 with my parents and siblings. Growing up as an immigrant I would often feel discouraged because among other hopes and dreams I wanted to attend a four-year university after high school. I knew going straight to a big college was not possible for me at the time, however, I did not let that discourage my effort to continue my education. After high school I worked full-time and attended Cerritos Community College as a part-time student. After completing my general education, I transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills and received my BA in English Literature. After receiving my BA, I attended and graduated from the University of La Verne College of Law. I took the California Bar Examination and became an attorney in December 2017.
As an immigrant I know firsthand the struggles immigrant families face in this country. When I was growing up I did not know of all the opportunities that were available to me. My work here with CHIRLA is very rewarding because this work allows me to help immigrants accomplish their dreams. In 2015 I volunteered with the CHIRLA Legal Department helping young adults apply for DACA. Meeting and helping young students that were applying to college and university brought great joy to my life because I knew these young immigrants had a great future ahead of them.
Today I am a staff attorney with the Family Unity Department and my job and goal is to use my legal education to help other immigrant families better their life and accomplish their dreams.
