Mariana Magaña

Policy Advocate

Mariana Magaña is originally from Jalisco, Mexico but grew up in the Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica. She attended Santa Monica Community College and then transferred to UCLA where she majored in Political Science and minored in Chicana/o Studies. Mariana has had the opportunity to work in an immigration and criminal law office, spent one year in Sacramento as an Executive Fellow under the Office of Governor Brown in the Department of Health Care Services, and currently serves as the Local Policy Advocate at CHIRLA. As an immigrant herself, Mariana is extremely passionate about immigrant advocacy efforts that are inclusive of all 11 million and dismantles the good/bad immigrant narrative. She hopes to continue pursuing a career that explores the intersection of the immigration and criminal system and aspires to obtain a Ph.D. to expand her knowledge and engage in research led advocacy efforts. In her free time, she enjoys running, eating, spending time with her family and friends, watching boxing matches and soccer games
