COALITION FOR HUMANE IMMIGRANT RIGHTS

PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:   August 9, 2021
A PATH TO CITIZENSHIP AS PART OF INFRASTRUCTURE PACKAGE MAKES ECONOMIC AND MORAL SENSE
The inclusion of $107 billion for lawful permanent status for qualified immigrants in the budget resolution presented by Senate Democrats is the right path towards building better with us.  Congress must pass and oppose poison pills.

LOS ANGELES -- The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the largest immigrant rights organization in California, commended Senate Democrats for including instructions in the budget resolution for the Judiciary Committee that carve out $107 billion for "lawful permanent status for qualified immigrants."   On Monday, Senate Democrats unveiled a $3.5 trillion budget for their infrastructure package which they aim to pass via a process known as reconciliation.  The inclusion of a path to citizenship for some of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living and contributing in the U.S. marks a definite and bold step towards the immigrant justice we have fought for during the past 35 years.

Please attribute the following statements to Angelica Salas, CHIRLA executive director:

"Our community has been waiting for a chance at a path to citizenship for more than 30 years and Senate Democrats today let it be known they are serious about fulfilling this long-standing promise.    Reconciliation is the only legislative vehicle that cannot be obstructed by the Republican Party.  The momentum for a path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants, TPS holders, farmworkers, and essential workers has been building and Congress must heed the will of the large majority of Americans who want our immigration system to be just and fair.  Congress must pass the proposed human infrastructure package because building back is better with us.

Much work remains to be done in the next few weeks to ensure the proposed budget sees the light of day.   We will be mobilizing throughout the summer and into the fall to make sure the proposed package does not get bombarded by poison pills.  Our communities have been key guardians of the American dream and indispensable, essential collaborators, especially during this world pandemic.   The path towards success is spelled with immigrants and the leadership in the Senate recognizes it and we will support its successful passage."
