IMMIGRANT SENIORS AND THE DISABLED NEED RELIEF AND RECOGNITION IN CALIFORNIA
It was wrong for the Assembly Appropriations Committee to stop AB 2415.

Los Angeles, CAThe Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the largest immigrant rights organization in California, said the Assembly Appropriations Committee was wrong to kill AB 2415, the proposed expansion of the Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) which would have recognized and provided much needed and deserved relief to undocumented immigrants and the disabled for their years of contributions to our state.

Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Executive Director.

“Immigrants who have grown old working tirelessly in California without reaping the benefits of their labor want to live in dignity and be recognized as a full member of this society now when they are most vulnerable.  The Appropriations Committee was wrong in not advancing AB 2415 for full consideration.  We are committed to protecting immigrants in their golden years and we know California will soon rectify this wrong and recognize them the next time we re-introduce the measure.”

Antonia Camarillo, 71 year old resident of El Monte and CHIRLA member:

“I have been to Sacramento several times to speak to our elected officials about my contributions as a worker during the past few decades.  My walking cane is worn out, but I still have a lot of energy and my cane can still hold me to keep walking and telling my story time and time again until they listen and recognize people like me.”

Margot Valverde, 68 year old resident of San Fernando and CHIRLA member:

“We will not accept a NO response from our legislature.  What we are asking for is fair and the right thing to do.  As we fight for legalization for our community members nationally, we are also asking our state to lead in recognizing elder immigrant workers, as it has led in so many other issues.”
